Lynn and I bought our first investment property back in 1991 and began, what would become, a life long passionate journey in real estate investing.
But, it wasn’t until 2009 that I pursued getting my real estate license. (It’s another story as to why…) Lynn followed and got her license in 2014, after waiting until our youngest was out of school.
We owned our own office building, which we managed our 60 rental properties out of, when I got my license. So we seldom had a need to go into the Keller Williams office.
So in the latter part of 2018 when Lynn and I bought another office in Draper, UT, I decided to get my Brokers license and go independent… as the Marchant Real Estate Group.
After all, I wasn’t really utilizing any of the many things that KW had to offer anyway. So, why should I keep paying them commission splits every year?
I had never thought of leaving KW before this. In fact, I never really thought it mattered much where I hung my license. I just did my thing and helped people with their real estate needs.
But once I discovered the liability that Principal Broker’s assumed, and the additional job of assuring compliance of every little detail, I wasn’t so interested in going independent anymore!
That’s when I reached out to my good friend brandon in Las Vegas to learn more about this trending cloud-based brokerage he was part of.
What he and his partner Matt, who is up in Canada, showed me… simply seemed “to good to be true”!
Long story short, I asked several friends of mine in the industry to look at the brokerage model for me and poke holes in it, tell me what it was that I was missing.
Well, they couldn’t poke holes in it! It was what I thought it was. eXp is a ginormous disruptor to the real estate industry that offers better TRAINING, better TOOLS, OWNERSHIP in the company AND the ability to share in the REVENUE of the company!
You know what? All those years as a real estate investor, I NEVER wanted to become a real estate agent. (again, it’s another story as to why I got my license. Feel free to ask me about it some time)
NOW… I couldn’t be more proud to be a Realtor and to be associated with this great company!
Our production increased 30% our first year with the company. We have improved the lives of many other agents and are having so much fun together. The surprising benefit from joining eXp Realty was the collaboration and comradery with the other agents. Not just locally, but all over the Country. And now globally, as we are expanding internationally very rapidly.
By participating in eXp’s equity share program, we have accumulated stock/ownership in exp world holdings (expi). as of today, 2.5 years with eXp, we have accumulated over 10,000 shares of stock!!! (Look it up…ticker symbol expi)
(When I left KW after 10 years, I left with nothing but a bunch of certificates and glass trophies for being a producing agent)
We also receive a nice revenue share check each month because we elected to help other agents succeed. You can’t do this at other brokerages! The only income available to the average agent, in the traditional brokerage model, comes from only two sources… helping people buy, or helping people sell.
Lynn and I are simply doing the same thing we were doing at KW, we are just being compensated differently. We are learning more, we have better tools, and we have better relationships here. Because we are all on the same team, as owners.
